The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology (SCCIT) fervent initiatiave for regulating the industry and creating a level playing field for all broadcasting services and expressing concerns over a continuing decline in cable TV subscribers is a welcome move. In its 56th report on ‘Regulation of Cable Television in India’, submitted in both Houses of the Parliament, the standing committee told the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) that the Cable TV industry needs to be regulated through a comprehensive Act.

The Sony – Zee merger saga which has been unravelling for the past two years has been nothing short of an episodic thriller saga. It looked like it was nearing the finishing line and the last lap of the marathon saw some dramatic turnaround. It was assumed that this deal will go through in the midst of the Reliance – Disney Star India merger. And this would create a duopoly in the Indian broadcast sector. But the Sony – Zee merger got derailed and now enters a litigation phase which could get vicious for both the parties. The Reliance – Disney Star India merger looks like smooth sailing currently, unless there is a last minute hitch. However, that looks unlikely
